Are you getting paid what you're worth?

Welcome to the Median Recruitment Annual Salary Survey. Recognised as the definitive industry report, the results are based on statistics from the past twelve months derived from the hundreds of job briefs we take from clients and the thousands of candidates we interview for those jobs.
So what to make of the results? The good news is that several recent reports suggest the PR industry is coping with the recession better than other marketing sectors. And this is by and large borne out by the fact that whilst salaries certainly aren't surging ahead, they are pretty stable. The sector most under pressure is perhaps unsurprisingly consumer. The healthcare sector on the other hand continues to experience a severe shortage of skilled candidates, inevitably driving salaries higher.
There's no hiding from it, the second half of 2009 was our quietest on record; clients were taking a conservative approach to hiring and good candidates were only tempted to move by extraordinary offers. So what of the coming year? A recent survey suggested almost a third of corporate comms directors expect budgets to be reduced further in 2010. All we  can say is that the first two months of the new year has seen a resurgence both in clients hiring (across in-house and agency) and good candidates entering the market.
